Take Action

To the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,

I am writing to express strong opposition to the proposed Johnson Tract Gold Mine. This project poses serious risks to critical wildlife, food systems, and a thriving tourism economy in the region. The area supports healthy populations of brown bears, which are central to a growing bear-viewing industry that sustains local economies. Disturbance, displacement, and degraded habitat generated by mining operations, the haul road, and associated infrastructure would have lasting economic and environmental consequences.

The project also raises alarm for the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale, whose already fragile population cannot withstand additional stressors from noise, pollution, pile driving and dredging, vessel traffic, and potential fuel spills in their critical habitat.

Equally concerning are the impacts on nesting shorebirds and seabirds. The proposed port location hosts the largest nesting colony of seabirds in Cook Inlet. Industrial development, increased vessel traffic, fugitive dust, and the risk of fuel spills associated with the proposed port and haul road shrink and compromise habitat and long-term survival of these species.

Finally, in addition to a long-sustained regional commercial and personal use salmon fishery, the region’s razor clam beds are an essential food source, especially given the loss of east side Cook Inlet clam populations. Any degradation of water quality from sedimentation, dust deposition, or heavy metals and fuel contamination could further erode food security for nearby communities and access to traditional foods for local tribes.

The Johnson Tract Mine threatens one of Alaska’s most intact ecosystems and sustainable economies. I respectfully request that the Corps deny the Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act permits for this short-term, high-risk industrial project.
